3 Tips To Help You Enjoy Life More

June 19, 2015

Life is full of stress. Work deadlines, family requirements, and financial burdens. Once you add walking the dog, going to the grocery store, health issues, and/or finding time to sleep, you are zapped of energy and feel worse for wear. No matter how hard you try to relax, there is always that little voice (or voices) in your head prodding you to take on another task or worry about something. In order to maintain our sanity, we must take a little time out now and then to truly enjoy life and decompress. The three tips below will help you to smile a little more and stress a little less.

Don’t forget to laugh!

Life is chaotic, but if you allow yourself to be constantly burdened by the negativity associated with chaos, you will be unable to manage the many stressors in your life. Don’t be afraid to laugh at your situation or take a step back from any negativity. Try to laugh every now and then throughout your day. Even if you have to act silly to inspire the giggles, do so with wild abandon! Go out to lunch with a friend who makes you laugh, watch someone on TV that’s funny, or when playing with your kids, act a little strangely to generate fun. Doing so will make even the most stressful day seem lighter and brighter.

Take a walk or engage in exercise

Sometimes, you just need to take a break, and doing so is essential for mental well-being. No project is so important that you can’t take a half hour to take a stroll and enjoy the sunshine. Breath deeply, enjoy the sights, and quiet your mind. Take time to reflect on the day and acknowledge that you are not in control. Everything will fall into place. Not only will a short walk improve your outlook on the day and give you renewed energy to accomplish your tasks, but will improve your physical health as well.

Hug those you love and indulge in something you enjoy

Sometimes the cure for a hectic or bad day is a hug from a friend, mom, dad, kids, or significant other. Studies show that hugs that last at least 10 seconds spike oxytocin in the brain and make you feel happier. A hug also has the tendency to stop the chaos in your brain. If you aren’t feeling much like a hug, give yourself a treat once a day. Eat a piece of chocolate or enjoy a glass of wine. Watch something you like on television, take a bike ride, or listen to music. Doing so will quiet your brain, and allow you to unwind.
